Family Photos

Extending my range of research this weekend, I sourced through bin-bags full of old family photos. It was a very emotional experience seeing so much of my late family members and hearing funny stories from my mom... I think the fact that there was such a wide variety of random, unposed, real imagery helped spark this emotion. It really gave me faith in not necessarily having to focus my project on posed fashion imagery and gave me confidence to approach upcoming shoots with more freedom and relaxation, just seeing what comes of them. I have kept some images so I can refer back and potentially use them for more refined inspiration, such as that documentary aspect or a discreet sense of narrative from images. The fun-living feel photos mostly of my parents in their youth were unsurprisingly often my favourites, reinforcing my obvious interest in youth style, culture, life, truth.

This research also got me thinking about how differently digital advances have effected photography. The sense of carelessness of whether a photo was aesthetically pleasing or not seemed so apparent to me after looking through the shots. It seemed more about recording a stage or a memory which I think was enhanced through the "click-and-go" style of photography, no editing, etc. This is definitely another area that will could be reflected through my project.
