Independent Reflection:
On review of shoot 1, I found myself preferring candid shots, e.g. where the model was laughing or adjusting or simply seemed more relaxed/in a natural pose. I thought about why I prefer these shots and came to the conclusion that this, along with other authentic aspects, such as the styling from her own wardrobe and the close-to-home locations, seem to somewhat critique the outbreak of working-class style glamorisation through a more natural perspective. I'd love to continue shooting more subjects with genuine association to the urban youth trend. However, I feel that the link this has to working-class is yet to be pushed through the project. Thus, I am keen to review Ellie's disposable camera shots, especially as she said she will be going home this weekend.
Mentor Meeting 3:
Expanding on the review of shoot 1 today, it was agreed by all that the shots taken in the models own room were much stronger, particularly as they emphasise the "authentic aspects" I noted on initial independent review. Furthermore, the unposed shots, to the extent of the "model" simply doing up her shoes whilst casually talking to me were considered the strongest. The natural aspect previously discussed was consistently brought forward in conversation by myself and my mentor and started to really seem to overshadow any working-class focus. We started to acknowledge this and decided that broadening this element from class to a wider, subtle insight into youth/genuine behaviour/reality behind said style could be a really interesting approach. This can be pushed by continuing to shoot people in their own personal spaces and creating a casual and natural atmosphere. Disposable shots from the subjects themselves will still be completely relevant and add further depth to this idea as their family/social lives/personal spaces/life is recorded and unedited through their eyes. Again, the contrast this may have against how I naturally shoot the subjects may add greater interest still, particularly as I'm naturally drawn to their style and probably see them in a different light.
This new established direction gives me so much more freedom to explore youth and experiment with how they're represented, all with a much more authentic undertone than initially planned. It's different from my normal posed fashion projects and I think that's really exciting. I came away from today's meeting feeling so pleased, with faith in the new project direction. My current aims are now to research further relating to youth projects and similar aspects and think about unanswered questions such as the final outcome layout.
