Shoot 2 Review

Today me, my photographer Jack Valpy and a couple of friends went to shoot Josh Milsom, another 20 year old Solent student, in his flat. I encouraged these extra friends of ours to come along, as I felt it was important to create the most relaxed, natural environment as possible. It worked! Following the previously explored and chosen direction of photographing the subject's in their own personal spaces went very smoothly and I found myself becoming increasingly enthusiastic about unposed shots; to the point where I'm loving snaps mid-meal or conversation, face askew or openly acknowledging the photographer with a funny expression. My direction is still pivotal for the photographer, particularly as I have to constantly reinforce the shooting style and make conversation or suggest new activities when atmosphere dies out. This approach not only feels unique to me, like I'm capturing something no one else possibly could as they don't know this chain of people as I do or this stage in our lives but it also undoubtably makes the whole process feel more relaxed. The stress of the project has been taken way down and I can now thoroughly enjoy recording and exploring the individual's portrayed, letting go of critical "fashion" posing.

However, regardless of this approach, my natural perspective of each person shot still seems to reflect some kind of youth "style". I find this to be an added interest to the project as representation is explored and I keenly await all disposables back to compare this against how each subject represents themselves and their surroundings, etc, through their own eyes.

I have also been in contact with 3 other upcoming people and I'm starting to really feel a connection between the loop of individuals, mainly due to their connection to me and the stage of life they all share... students approaching the end of an era. I feel this link may be the key to a title for the Zine...
